Graduate Research Scholarship
The purpose of this Scholarship is to provide tuition support to a plastic surgeon in his/her pursuit of an advanced degree in research (i.e. Master's in Science, Epidemiology/Biostatistics, etc.). A financial award in the amount not to exceed $25,000 will be given to an ASPS Candidate member, plastic surgery resident or fellow affiliated with an accredited plastic surgery program who has demonstrated a commitment to advancing the public's health through their pursuit of an advanced research degree (ex. MPH, MS, PhD).

Kristopher Sugg, MD

A native of Southeastern Michigan, Dr. Sugg completed his undergraduate studies in chemistry as a Presidential Scholar at Wayne State University. He then earned a medical degree from the Wayne State University School of Medicine. With enthusiasm for complex problem solving, Dr. Sugg entered the Integrated Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Residency Program at the University of Michigan in July 2007, where he became interested in skeletal muscle mechanics and nerve regeneration following peripheral nerve injury and repair.
Under the mentorship of Drs. Paul S. Cederna and Melanie G. Urbanchek, Dr. Sugg spent a year in the neuromuscular lab investigating sensory signal modulation in the rat peripheral afferent nerve as part of a coordinated effort to develop a prototype sensory neural interface for patient-controlled neural prosthetics. More recently, Dr. Sugg enrolled in the PhD program in molecular and integrative physiology at the University of Michigan. He will complete his dissertation work in the lab of Drs. Christopher L. Mendias and Susan V. Brooks-Herzog whose research interests include basic and translational musculoskeletal biology.
The over-arching aim of Dr. Sugg's project is to understand how tendon fibroblasts migrate through tendon, the mechanisms that determine their tissue-invasive phenotype, and to more clearly define epithelial-to-mesenchymal-related processes in tendon and their precise role in tendon growth and regeneration.
